Our
Menu
About Our Food
At the Arrow Sports Club we pride ourselves in serving
only the highest quality food. We have chosen to focus on a few
select items so as to assure our customers complete satisfaction.
The menu items we've selected are fish frys, hamburgers and buffalo
wings. To better understand these food items and improve their overall
quality, we needed to delve into their origins. We would like to
share that history with you.
Fish
Frys: A unique part of Wisconsin's culture, its legend and lore
have made it difficult to truly find its origins. Thought to have
been brought to the region by the German's who settled the area,
the fish fry has been a staple of lakeshore and farming communities
for a century. It is believed the first "beer batter"
was created in Milwauke (go figure) and up until that time, fish
was served socially as a "fish boil" which was still a
Door County favorite.
Although we feel no finer fish fry can be found outside
the Arrow Sports Club, here a few spots to check out as you travel
around Wisconsin. The Boscobel Hotel. Boscobel. You'll find nothing
better in the lower Wisconsin River area. The Del-Bar, Wisconsin
Dells. Their pan-fried Walleye is extremely tasty, and not cheap.
The Audubon Inn, Mayville. What a great town and great food. As
you drive through town you'll surely look for Opie, Andy and Bamey
Fife. Bosaki's Boathouse, Minocqua. May it's the fact that I saw
it burn down on July 22nd, 1972, but I still have a good time there.
Make sure you arrive early, as it's a longer wait than at the Arrow.
Hamburgers:
The Baltic provinces of Russia were home to a group of rowdies from
Tartary who developed a fondness for raw beef, known today as steak
tartar. The Germans, trading partners of the Tartars, who lived
in Hamburg acquired a taste for raw beef fried with onions, called
a "Hamburg Steak". German immigrants then brought it to
the USA in the 1800's. The hamburger was introduced into popularity
at the World's Fair in St. Louis. The first hamburger chain was
founded in 1921, in Wichita, Kansas. The "chain" was called
White Castle. The first true McDonalds was opened in 1955 in Des
Plaines, Illinois. It's founder Ray Kroc convinced his friends and
neighbors to invest in a quick-serve hamburger restaurant. One of
his neighbors was Milton Wendorf, the best man at our parents wedding.
Needless to say the closest we ever got to the McDonald's
fortune was hand-pressing our very own Arrow Burgers.
Buffalo
Wings: The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York had served chicken
as a popular item for several years. Owners Frank and Teressa Bellissimo
ran the family business and like anyone else they were looking for
a way to "spice up" business. One hot summer night, Mrs.
Bellissimo developed the now famous buffalo wing sauce in 1964.
One cold winter night in 1988 we were watching a Monday Night Football
game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. Coming out of
one of the commercial breaks they showed vendors preparing buffalo
wings for the fans. "Mmmm, they look good" we replied.
We immediately dispatched someone to Buffalo in order to investigate.
Actually a truck driver who was at the bar that night had to go
to Buffalo, New York the next day. He returned the next week with
recipe in hand and the rest is history. We've been perfecting our
buffalo wings since 1988, to the best of our knowledge it is the
longest of anyone in central Wisconsin.
